Trailers for Movies or Gaming is a niche band of Voiceover and very difficult to break into. This often exclusive club of vo work usually goes to an elite few who hold the bold, deep and rumbling Male Voices, often American in accent and guaranteed to give any multi million pound movie plenty of clout when advertising a new cinematic release.
That said, as the world becomes more multi cultural in its consumption of movie content not just the James Earl Jones voice gifted chaps are booked, this opens up an opportunities for female vocals to take centre stage and add something more diverse, connected and true to the stories that feature films and Games depict.
Women in cinema and gaming are now represented in a stronger light, both how the characters are written and their physical strength as well as leading roles in a story. This has thus challenged how their Trailers are crafted and content promoted worldwide.
I mention Gaming in this category of Voice Over as Games now gross way more than that of Feature film movies. Last year alone the music industry was said to have been worth $32 billion, the movie industry around $62 billion and Gaming industry $164 billion! Yep ponder on that fact for a while.
This is why Trailers for Games are just as coveted as Trailers for Movies and it’s not just an industry for the boys either which is really refreshing to find eventually.
Just take a look at The Gamer : Top 18 Games trailers of all time to get yourself an education on what’s a hit with players and fans of games. And likewise Screen rant : The 15 best movie Trailer Ever for enlightenment on the subject.
So the next time you sit down in the cinema to watch the Trailers, download your favourite Game or are looking at whats about to be released on the big screen or console, take 5 minutes to appreciate those that fought their way to the top of this elite few to voice these snippets of promotion and how they add to the experience and anticipation of the release.
