Navigating the Voiceover Industry Together: Trains, Planes, Scripts & Studios

“As a 16 year old school girl who has just passed my GCSE exams, I realise I’ve embarked on a journey that I never quite planned for, filled with lots of trains, planes, scripts and studios it’s been nothing short of incredible. It’s often hard to describe my unconventional path of voice acting to others, but when I think back to my younger self spending time in studios with my mum, everything starts to make sense”

“From a young age, I would sometimes go to work with mum which is nothing special, I guess everyone has done that. However being in pro sound studios from a young age and having our own recording studio was a little different, I just wasn’t aware of it. As long as I can remember I just enjoyed playing around in front of microphones, telling stories, singing songs or just chatting with friends and family, I didn’t think it was anything exciting or exceptional at the time, until I caught the bug”.

“Those early recordings were just something to make my dad roar with laughter. I never imagined it would lead to any sort of career path”

“In fact here is an early recording I made along with my first animation attempt I added some years later. It’s the kind of thing I’d record along with book reviews and news reports which included the weather and what I did at nursery that day. All with the purpose to make my dad roar with laughter”.

“In fact looking back I also had a huge repertoire of animation voices that I’d mimic from my favourite shows like the incredible ‘Phineas and Ferb’ which was created the year I was born.  So, you can imagine my excitement when I eventually met them in person at Disney, yet in reality this picture shows how painfully shy I was in that moment that I treasure as one of the best days EVER”!

“It’s a balancing act. School, scripts traveling and time out too”.

“Today, my working balance is almost the same as it was when I was much younger.  I don’t come out of school for many projects at all really, unless they are really big ones. We maintain a shared ethos about remaining focused on my voice work just as I do school and without unnecessary pressures. I’ve only just begun my studies for A levels and I’ve so much more to learn in front of the mic and in life”.

“Thanks to the encouragement and guidance of my mum the Momager – she’ll hate me using that name! Balancing school, studio time, traveling and friends is not too hard with her always looking out for me. Crucially she’s the barrier that protects me and is the first to remind me that auditions are opportunities to experience and enjoy. If you book them then that’s great, because for now as I don’t have a mortgage, just driving lessons to save up for, then the car”!

“There’s a great partnership between us all in the family, one that instills strong Northern values of hard work, respect and kindness. Sure the road ahead is uncertain and I’m definitely part of a generation that’s training for a job that hasn’t been invented yet but, one thing that’s for sure? I’m excited to see where my voice will take me and understand that this is a community I’m proud to be a small part of, one that I adore. One that is also a creative and kind one that is evolving in all kinds of ways and I’ve so much more to discover and explore.
